Review:

The war of the worlds

(Herbert George Wells)

Written by: Pablo Gracida.

SYNOPSIS: Herbert George Wells was a sharp critic of his times, what it’s reflected in “The war of the worlds”, recognized novel because of the exposition about the precarious condition of the technological, scientific, and military human advancement, in front of the superior power represented by the Martian technology, and finally some insignificant beings –as the terrestrial microorganisms– free humanity from inevitable extermination.

Herbert George Wells was one of the most influential authors in the society at the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century. His literature got positioned as one of the strongest in the Science Fiction genre, but undoubtedly, it was “The war of worlds” the story that let him place in the best sellers because of the battle between Martians and human beings.

This novel has social topics –even religious– in an explicit way. Wells is remembered as one of the most powerful critics in the English society. And we can find really interesting details making a deep analysis in his literature, about what was happening in England with the members of its society.

The war of the worlds is a narration in first person –the protagonist’s name is never mentioned– where is related his relationship with the other characters, also the despair about what is happening, even all the love he feels for his wife. A human world filled by doubts about Martian world will hold the story notoriously.

An adventure is written about the protagonist, and everything begins with the arrival of a meteorite. However, people will discover that this meteorite belongs to beings from Mars, and they have the objective of exterminate to the humans. It’s fantastic to know that these references of the Martians arrive in capsules, but they have the appearance of an octopus.

Everyone has listened a lot of stories about beings from another planet, there are some specialist people studying this kind of topics and they get no tired giving us information day by day to prove the existence of the Martians, although the Herbert Wells literature gives us really different references from what we have or believe.

With this book, your are going to comprehend the social trigger that takes the creation of this story about the Martian topic, the deep war that it develops, and the fantastic end with some beings that we have no idea that they have an amazing power on Earth. Who says that they could save humanity from a terrible Martian attack?

The protagonist and his wife are separated when a capsule falls in some cities, so they can’t find each other while this war is happening. He doesn’t lose the faith about find his wife alive, so he starts a trip where the beginning is to meet some characters that prove the different social levels in English society. Hope and illusion that the protagonist will find his wife are growing while the days and pages are spending, but the big obstacle of the Martians will prevent this being easy.

I know you would like that I write in this review, if they finally get together or not, but I think it worth to read this fantastic novel, while you are discovering the most terrific invasion of beings from another planet and their attempts to exterminate the humanity. Herbert George Wells perfectly describes the unique kind of people that could survive to an attack like this.  Would you achieve being part of this group?

Immerse yourself on the pages of The war of the worlds and join to the narration that marked a “before” and an “after” in the media power over the audience. Although nobody would believe in a Martian invasion –or even in the existence of Martians– I can assure you that we have the power of the literature to create several universes that could seem unreal… but maybe they are not.
