Review:
Journey to the center of the Earth
(Jules Verne)

Written by: Pablo Gracida.
SYNOPSIS: A really ancient handwritten found by the Professor Lidenbrock shows that is possible to travel to the center of the Earth. The wise man starts immediately with his nephew Axel and the guide Hans. Would that be possible? Would it be real? There’s just one way to prove it… and it is going and seeking that place. This novel isn’t just an incursion in a world with several secrets to discover. You can read so clearly the myth about the hollow earth and, at the bottom, the topic about going down to the hell, where people always lose something, but where they can comeback with more knowledge. So that, Axel leaves at heart of the Earth his non-belief about the awesome nature, while his uncle, the professor Otto Lidenbrock, returns to the top with all of his theories confirmed.
What a wonderful novel by Verne! A fascinating literary experience which takes a place in the list of the reviews from my favorite writer in my blog. How can’t you get surprised with each word of the novels by this extraordinary writer! There are few ways to write every sensation in my mind during each opportunity while reading the novels by Jules Verne.
While 1864 was passing, Verne published this amazing story, in a context where every play that this writer was decided to spread was seen as completely unreal adventure, even at the beginning, people thought his stories were Science Fiction. Journey to the Center of the Earth, from obvious reasons in the title, can’t be an exception about keep considering Jules Verne as a Science Fiction writer, because –being bitterly honest– nobody would believe that is possible to make a trip like this. However, this is the point where the first event detonates and it invites us to get a reflection about Verne’s writing, and everything it involves while he was creating with a pen, and with all of his scientific knowledge, a novel.
One of the reasons because ‘Journey to the Center of the Earth’ was involved in a strong controversy in the 19th century –and probably nowadays– is that Jules Verne defends, in this book, the theory about the center of the earth is totally hollow, so if this was real, because of biologic events, it exists inside the earth flora and fauna. This let that the way this story develops, can make a natural sensation about common questions for the human being.
It’s great to know that every book written by Verne is full of scientific data and information so relevant, which it has positioned him as one of the precursors in the scientific-futuristic genre, because the world have proved that a lot of his theories are true, and there are several inventions that the human being has brought to the reality due to Verne’s novels. Because of this, I have always believed that Jules Verne should have his own genre.
Biological, environmental, and climatological facts, and everything that is around the nature, have an important place in Journey to the Center of the Earth because these are key elements that define the direction of the novel. This is a story, where beyond the characters structures, everything that is happening is developing new historical, geographical and investigative events.
Four characters will be your main companions in these pages: Otto Lidenbrock, he is a professor who is passionate about discoveries, mysteries and secrets about the nature and the Earth; Axel, Professor Lidenbrock’s nephew, who brings a more human side to this story, and he places all the value of his actions in a position directed towards his beloved Graüben; Hans, the Icelandic guide, who joins to the journey for work reasons but he represents the voice from the social sector that needs to work to carry on, no matter their obligations and always taking care of the others. And we can’t forget to Arne Saknussemm, the main explorer who, even not being physically, all of his knowledge is placed in a manuscript, and he is the guilty about the beginning of this amazing adventure.
After having found the most important manuscript from Saknussemm, the professor decides to set off on a journey, which would change the history of the human being in the geographic –and literary– context. Who could imagine that the entrance to the center of the Earth is placed in an inactive volcano? –And this is not a spoiler–.
You are going to join to a way that will take you to discover the most awesome secrets that the Earth keeps inside it, with wonderful landscapes, seas, primitive animals and everything that the human being arrival was destroying little by little on the surface, no forgetting to add the unexpected way to find the exit of the most important journey in the life of these explorers.
Just open these pages, take your luggage and dive inside this fascinating literary creation from Jules Verne, so you can imagine, with your own mind, the magical experience that could be setting off a Journey to the center of the Earth. Have a nice journey!
